Proof of Life: Photos of Life in New York, Year 1

view from Governor's Island

I have been trying to get into the habit of toting a camera everywhere, documenting what feels like mostly mundane details of my time here. I’ve never been a “photo” person; I didn’t get a camera until after I graduated college and even then, wasn’t fond of using it.

I guess that’s why I started keeping a textual blog in the first place — to save a space somewhere where my intangible things couldn’t get clouded by an increasingly unreliable memory or washed away by the clock’s unrelenting current.

But sometimes it’s hard to get the text to also fit some of the little things — to tell some of the details that I still like but can’t find space for. That’s why I wanted to upload this assortment of photos of some of the stuff I’ve been up to since The Move. I think it’s a nice way to help round out the overall picture of how I’ve been getting on here while serving as a place marker for the end of Year 1.

And I just like looking at them.

And I hope you do, too.

Beers at Eataly's rooftop beer garden

So many places to drink …

White sangria at Sophia Wine Bar

… so little time.

Erynn, Sally, and I celebrating Sally's birthday at Pocha 32*

… where Sally basically demands everyone take a soju shot every five minutes and I eatĀ budaejigae for the first time. SO GOOD. I can’t believe none of my Korean friends have told me about this stuff until now. Fail, you guys. Fail.

*Missing Carol :(

A gelato flower from Amorino

I love getting flowers.

YUM!

Can my wedding bouquet just be a bigger version of this, please?

Regularly glued in front of the TV at home

Movies we’ve watched recently: Sin Nombre, Let the Bullets Fly, Exit Through the Gift Shop (me).

I love Netflix.

Playing LA Noire

I have finished the entire game since. Verdict: Meh. I still love Red Dead Redemption the most.

Trying to get into GMA's Summer Concert Series in Central Park

You can kind of see an inkling of the stage behind the trees. This crowd formed along the outer perimeter because the stage seating area had already been filled to capacity.

Spoiler alert: we did not get in and neither did anyone else I know. BUT we also did not wait all night in the park (like those who did get in — suckers!) and were not caught in the middle of the brief but scary stampede (yes, stampede).

Jeremy and I enjoying an outdoor not-free concert where we didn’t have to wait in line 7 hrs in advance

Worth. It.

Going dumb at the Paul van Dyke show

His six hour set felt like two …

Celebrating Fourth of July with Korean barbecue

And it was delicious!

Cooking at home on a regular basis

… because it’s too expen$ive to eat out all the time here. Seriously, NYC, you are one high maintenance woman.

But I love you anyways.

[Off to Hong Kong, and then Vietnam, tomorrow! So ... another photo-heavy post in the near future. Reading is for suckers! HA! HA! HA!]

  1. Nice collection of photos from your year in NYC! I’m just about to head back to Korea for another teaching assignment and the photos of the budaejigae and galbi bbq sure made me hungry :)

Ooh I haven’t been to Korea before, but I really want to go. I’ve heard great things about Jeju and a lot of my friends always talk about how fun Seoul is.

Happy and safe (extended) travels! Bet you’ll be eating good while you’re out there (jealous…). #koreanfoodrules
